Notes from the Field, Nov. 17, 2016

It's hard to imagine the Wall Street Journal without deputy bureau chief Don Clark -- he worked there 23 years. But as of Dec. 15, Don is out the door, having accepted the buyout offered last month by WSJ parent company News Corp. Always quick to return an email, tech PR pros will miss him. Says Don: "That's what they've been telling me -- and it's gratifying."

Profile: Ben Kepes, IDG

Ben Kepes used to be a writer who did a bit of investing on the side. Today the enterprise tech influencer is an investor and advisor who does a bit of writing. Why the switch? "I was tired of being played," says Ben. "As journalists we get a very one-sided picture of what's happening."

Instead of you going to DEMO, what if DEMO came to you? That's the idea behind Traction Technology Partners, founded last December by former DEMO producers Erick Schonfeld and Neal Silverman. Theirs is a complicated business model. But it is the right idea in an era where F2F and community are so symbiotic and will only remain so.

Dreamforce Coverage Deconstructed

San Francisco will uncoil when Dreamforce ends today. Las Vegas can handle 160,000 people. South of Market can't. Salesforce did what it could, renting a cruise ship to house attendees. For our part we learned a lot by studying Dreamforce coverage -- including the nine-step process by which CEO Marc Benioff prepared his keynote speech. Every client should consider using this process as well.

TechBeacon Wants Your Copy!

You're constantly asking us where you can place your contributed content orphans -- in "Tier 1," of course. Unfortunately, there's little room at the Tier 1 Inn, for reasons we'll revisit another time. In cases like this, remember TechBeacon. We wrote about it April. Have you seen it? You know David Linthicum, yes? Stephanie Overby?
